Paris /ˈpær.ɪs/ is the capital and most populous city of France.
Since the 17th century, Paris has been one of the world's major centers of finance, diplomacy, commerce, fashion, gastronomy, and science. Due to its leading role in the arts and sciences, as well as its very early street lighting system, it became known as "the City of Light" in the 19th century.
Despite its extraordinary charms such as fashion, gastronomy, and some of the world's most important historical and cultural landmarks, the "City of Light" can also feel like an anarchist, post-apocalyptic hellhole - people litter, spit, and pee freely in the streets as if the city were their personal lavatory, bin, and ashtray combined.
Unsurprisingly, some individuals who feel that the city was not what they had expected develop a sense of extreme disappointment. This condition is commonly viewed as a severe form of culture shock and is called "Paris syndrome".
The "Paris syndrome" is characterized by a number of psychiatric symptoms, such as acute delusional states, hallucinations, derealization, depersonalization, anxiety, and also psychosomatic manifestations, such as dizziness, tachycardia, sweating, and others, including vomiting.
